Shared with me in Proton Drive for desktop user interface

At Proton, we’re on a mission(new window) to build an internet where privacy isn’t just an option — it’s the default. That’s why we created Proton Drive(new window), a secure alternative to cloud storage providers like Google or Dropbox that can access your files. With powerful end-to-end encryption(new window), Proton Drive ensures your personal data remains just that — personal.

Last year, we expanded this vision to millions more people with the launch of Proton Drive for Windows(new window), letting you manage files directly from your laptop or computer while maintaining your privacy and security.

Today, we’re excited to present what’s possible with the latest version of Proton Drive for Windows and introduce Shared with me — a new way to collaborate with others in real time, right from your desktop.

Secure collaboration from your desktop

Proton Drive for Windows now makes it easier to work on and contribute to shared files or folders — even when offline.

Access shared files offline with Proton Drive for Windows

With the introduction of Shared with me, you can view, edit, and access files and folders that have been shared with you from your desktop while maintaining the privacy and security provided by Proton Drive’s end-to-end encryption(new window).

This new space helps simplify collaboration so you can stay on top of group projects. Now, you can easily work on shared documents, such as Excel spreadsheets or Photoshop files, directly from your desktop. Any changes you make are synced automatically, ensuring your colleagues always have the latest version. You can also monitor the sync status of shared files, see real-time updates or pending changes, and quickly identify who shared a file and what permissions you’ve been granted.

And, just like with the files you own, Proton Drive for Windows now lets you access files that have been shared with you, even without an internet connection — simply select the files you want to make available offline, and your collaborators will be able to see your updates once you reconnect.

Access files anywhere

With Proton Drive for Windows, you can sync any file or folder from your computer directly to your secure cloud. This lets you access your files anytime, anywhere — whether you’re using your smartphone, tablet, or browser. It’s the ideal solution for remote work or gaining quick access to important files when on the go.

Sync on-demand

Free up space on your computer by uploading your files to Proton Drive and accessing them from your desktop through the Windows app whenever needed. When you need offline access, during a flight, for example, you can download cloud-stored files to your desktop. Once you’re back online, any updates will be automatically reflected across your devices.

Safeguard your data

As with everything we do, when you use the Drive desktop app, end-to-end encryption protects your files before they even leave your computer. From legal contracts to personal financial records, our encryption keeps your data private so you always maintain confidence and confidentiality.

What’s next for Proton Drive

With the introduction of Shared with me, we’ve passed a significant milestone in our goal to bring you a cloud storage(new window) solution that gives you complete control over your files while enabling seamless and secure collaboration.

We’re rapidly working to continue improving your Proton Drive experience. We recently made all Proton Drive apps open source and are introducing new features to Docs in Proton Drive(new window) — giving you totally private alternatives to Google and other Big Tech companies that can see your private photos, scan your sensitive documents, or share your data with advertisers or third parties.

If you’re not already protecting the files, photos, and documents on your computer with Proton Drive, now is the perfect time to start. Proton Drive for Windows gives you peace of mind over your data, protecting your files with end-to-end encryption from the convenience of your desktop. Sign up and download the Drive desktop app today.

As a community-supported company, we value your feedback to help guide our product development in the future.
